Our approach

The brainchild of its founder, Blue Ocean Law takes a holistic and human rights-based approach to the practice of law. Forsaking the traditional top-down structure of most law firms, we adopt a grassroots orientation that privileges civil society and marginalized voices. The well-being of individuals and communities, particularly vulnerable ones, motivates our project and client selection. Emerging from within the region, Blue Ocean Law works on issues of pressing concern to Pacific peoples—political and economic self-determination for non-self-governing territories, redress for victims of nuclear testing and non-consensual medical experimentation, accountability for anthropogenic climate change, and recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples. Guided by the belief that Indigenous peoples possess part of the answer to humanity’s most intractable problems, we seek, in all our work, to advance their rights and interests.
